A moment with Mr.Mitch...

I give to you Mr. Mitch, a producer from South-East London. He's riding the wave of amazing new grime producers creating beats centred on melody and a sense of fun. His songs are clear evidence that grime is moving away from being nothing more than greezy basslines and dark synths.

It’s refreshing and exciting to hear 90s video games influencing electronic music across the board because we all love the simplicity and catchiness of those sounds, right?

A perfect example of these sounds can be heard in his 'Tamagotchi Love' song

Tamagotchi Love by Mr.Mitch

Speaking to him, you get the idea that he feels grime will gain the recognition it deserves. I for one believe him because there are so many forward thinking producers around at the minute all just waiting for their time

I caught up with Mr. Mitch to talk about working with Skepta, live grime shows and a little secret…

Could you tell us about your past and what inspired you to start making beats?

Hip Hop eJay! I got a copy of this when I was about 12 and loved messing about with it, but it just made me want to explore further into the world of music making. So I got a copy of Fruity Loops and just progressed from there.

What are your plans for promoting your forthcoming ‘Fright Night’ EP?

DJs are very important to me. They're the main port of call for most people when trying to hear the newest music, so getting the DJs to play them is a big first step. I'm getting a lot of support from DJs outside of the grime scene which is a big help.

All producers have their own method of making a song. What's yours?

I'm a melody guy so when I'm building my tunes, 90% of the time I start by layering loads of melodies together to try to give it a particular groove. The rest just follows from there. I've got a pretty small setup: I'm running Logic 9 off of my iMac, my monitors are KRK Rokit 6s and I've got a Roland Juno D that I'm just using as a midi controller.

Your songs have upbeat, ‘fun’ melodies in a grime template, does it just come naturally?

I've tried to make greezy sounding beats before but when I do I'm not really being true to myself. I've never had a hard life or been an aggressive guy, so my music reflects my personality. Plus when I'm in a rave I would personally rather hear music that makes me happy and want to dance instead of making me feel like fighting everyone around me.

You have a lot of remixes and instrumentals. Do you plan to have many vocals and if so who are you looking to work with?

I'm currently working with Skepta on a couple of tracks. I'm also working with a rapper called Abiade and I've got some tracks out at the moment with Norwegian rap group Vaagsbgyd Handy. I'm definitely open to working with more in the future, as long as I like what they’re doing.

What are your plans for DJing?

I really want to develop a good live show, integrating a lot of the music that I'm influenced by as well. I really want to develop a new live dimension to Grime.

What producers should we all be aware of and what music do you enjoy playing out?

Producers doing a lot right now are SRC, Royal-T, J Beatz, Deeco and Swindle. Each of them have their own specific styles and are pushing grime in a big way.

What’s your ultimate goal as a musician/DJ?

My main ambition is just to have international recognition and success as a grime producer. I want grime to be a respected genre, so having many different strands of it will help move it onwards and upwards!

And finally… can you tell us a secret?

My girlfriend is giving birth to my son in December! I'm going to turn him into a musical genius.

Here's an exclusive track for our blog

His next release, the 'Fright Night’ EP (featuring remixes from Deset, FA Kode, Moony and SRC) will be released on his own label Gob Stopper Records on 19th September.

Get it from iTunes, Juno, Amazon and Spotify.

Breach-Fatherless

I know I'm quite late on this but it needs a mention.

Isn't just annoying when there's a song on rotation but absolutely no info on release, label etc etc...

Well Breach's song Fatherless has been rotating round Rinse, Oneman and Joy Orbison to name a few but they also don't know too much!

All I do know is this is an amazing song and Breach has a LOT of balls to use that 'Flute' sound, and it's awesome!

Listen to when it drops, it's like a mad Indian snake charmer on speed!

Hypnotic, tribal, droning, amazing!!!

Lil Silva and M.U.S.K, Nottingham Friday 3rd September..

I've just been added to the 'Girls Go Free' lineup with Lil Silva next Friday(3rd September)!

This should open up some more doors for me out of Sheffield....

The guys who organise the 'Girls Go Free' night at Stealth Nightclub Nottingham have recorded a couple of podcasts and I expect there will be more to come.

Download the 'Basslaced Podcast 002' HERE, featuring The Others and Dread MC, which is hosted by Karizma and Standfast

Lil Silva's helping add new dimensions to the UK Funky sound right now with releases on my favourite label Night Slugs.

Night Slugs is the home to Mosca, Bok Bok, L-Vis 1990, Girl Unit, Kingdom to name a few.

Below are a few examples of what Night Slugs and Lil Silva are about

For anyone from Notts, come down it'd be nice to meet ya!

Me and my wandering mind.....

Recently I've been trying to suss out why when I've DJ'd Grime music in the North of England that a lot of the time the crowd don't react to it!

Now I'm not at a position where I'm an established enough DJ/Artist that people 'go mental' to whatever I play....YET

So this leaves me in the scenario of what to play??

I'm not gonna sell my soul and just play the standard, 'massive-build-up-and-drop-make-everyone go-mental 'music but what dya do, when you're playing songs you love and believe sound amazing in a nightclub but the crowd just don't feel it like you do?!!

I mean have a listen to some tracks I've tried and tested, some work(mainly in Bigger Than Barry nights) and some don't!

Now tell me that these aren't club tunes?!

I'm becoming more frustrated at the lack of like minded people in Sheffield and surrounding areas!

The only place I could play this would be Niche nightclub, but that place don't attract my ideal target audience!

What do I do, move to London?!

All ideas/opinions would be usefull:- muskmanbenji @hotmail.com

RANT OVER

More music, soon come

The near future...

I'm currently getting the last bits of c£$h together for my little European venture in September, so I possibly won't be able to blog for a month, but....

I've lined up a few big artists for interviews/exclusives/remix stems, so expect to see them in the coming weeks up to September.

I'm still working hard on my 'Tropical Garage' concept E.P, In fact I'm down here now making some swung beats!

Anyways the suns out here in Sheffield, so here's my song of the day....

Le1f.....free downloads

I'd like to introduce you to to New York producer Le1f

His song 'Timbs' has been featured by the NME recently and also was remixed by Edu-K, the man behind my favourite Major Lazer remix

Every now and again something out of my usual musical spectrum grabs my attention, when I recieved Le1fs mp3's this is exactly what happened!

The vocals kinda reminds me of The Cool Kids/Pharrell the way their drawn out and doped up! The way his tunes kick in with big style square synths gives em that extra energy after the doped vocals.

Think Cool Kids meets Joker and creates a new world of Purple Hip Hop.

Here's a folder to download 3 original tracks and 1 remix by Edu K:-

Or here are the single tracks...

Blog about a blog about a blog....

I'm writing a quick blog as I'm just scanning through a mountain of music I've been sent recently, so hang tight on the music front.....

For now skoot over to the Under The Radar Mag-Blog as the guys over there just wrote a few nice words about your's truly....

Keep an eye over there cause they have a few big 'TINGS' in the pipeline including more events and me joining the writers to contribute on the Garage/Grime side of things.....

Oh go on then....

Have a listen to Damu, I'm feeling his 'Skinnydipper' tune, reminds me of something from the Nightslugs label.

Sunday comedown music....

Amberscape from Syndey, Austrailia asked me to take a listen to his Soundcloud page and so I did!

I turned my phone on as I woke up on this Sunday morning and had listen to the 2 songs he has uploaded and couldn't think of a more perfect Sunday morning vibe.

Wether it be the end of a long night or coming down from a crazy weekend this music just brings you right round again!

HowIloathe is my favourite of the 2, hypnotic, trippy vocals and a nice Garagey beat!

and Yuki-onna, with it's broken chopped up beat and it's droning synth sounds....

Keep checking back for release info on these as there's label interest.

Rut Blees Luxembourg

I have no idea why, but the photography of this German photographer just puts me in a weird place!?!!

I mean photo's like the 'Original Pirate Material' and 'A Weekend in the City' album covers just remind me of sitting on a tube with some headphones on staring out the window as the World goes by.

I'm not a massive fan of photography but her work is something that gets me every time.

Take a minute to have a flick through these google images

Just read over at Squeegie that Starkey creator of all things badman in the left-field dubstep-purple-chilled-hyped up music World is giving away a free E.P in exchange for your email.

If your not aware of him have a listen to my favourite tune of his, featuring P-Money

DJ-SKT

DJ S.K.T inboxed me a HUUGE folder of UK Funky tunes, jump over HERE to listen and download as you like.

Have a listen to his remix of the classic 'Missing'

4Trak-Remix Stems

Hi all.

4Trak hit my inbox with a very dark and moody post-dubstep song entitled 'Scuba Diving In The Thames'

The track is short and goes straight in with a very atmospheric subbed out sound.

I thought it would be a good idea to put my own little twist on this, so I did a little re-work.

The stems are HERE if you'd like to remix this song, make sure you send your versions over to muskmanbenji AT hotmail DOT com

Thank you, goodnight, much love

Terror Danjah-Hardrumentals free download.

'Grime' instrumentalist and out and out badman 'Terror Danjah' just gave us another zip file of his latest tunes.

Entitled 'Hardrumentals' its a collection of 'Grime' beats reflecting his signature sound.

Download it here.

It's SRC's Birthday, to celebrate he gives us some free music!

SRC

Hey there I'd like make you aware of a Birmingham Grime producer called SRC.

I follow him on Twitter and earlier today he announced it was his Birthday, to celebrate he uploaded three free instrumentals for us to download!

I was introduced to the 8-bit, game boy infused Grime producer through the Butterz 'Grime' blog, biggup Elijah and Skilliam for introducing so many new artists!

The first of the free songs is 'Scumbag' which has chopped a up repeating keyboard/piano line which lends itself more towards a hip hop beat rather than 'Grime', I'd love to hear a vocal over this!

The second is 'Homepage' which sounds more like SRC's signature 8-bit square synth sounding 'Grime' music.

The third is 'Powerman' which is a more upbeat and bigger sounding beat with a nice distorted synth line, still with echoes of his 8-bit sounds piercing through.

Make sure you buy SRC's-Ryouko E.P which is out now on the 'No Hats No Hoods' label.

His next release is something I've been waiting a long second for.....

'Goomba' which will released by the Butterz label 'Quality Street' along side Terror Danjah, Royal T and Mr.Mitch.

Tattoo O'clock...

Im getting the itch for another tattoo and I've been giving some serious thoughts into have an Escher style Tesselation wrapped around my leg...

I really love Escher as he was the first artist that struck my attention when I was young.

I'm thinking of recreating this...

A few random pieces of music for you to get stuck into.

Hey all I've just about recovered from my Bigger Than Barry set on Friday, which was thoroughly enjoyable as it was extended to 2 hours!...

Here are a couple of highlights from this week....

Twitter is a pretty amazing place for someone like myself who loves to discover new artists, music and general goings on.

A lot of the music I will feature will come from there and here are a couple of artists I have discovered through following certain people...

'Grizzly Artist' from Brixton SW9 is someone I've discovered by following a few Grime DJ's and he's one hard working Grime and Hip Hop MC, I've loosely followed him for 6 months and he's racked up 600+ followers.

He's currently giving away his AWOL Vol 2-Never Gonna Rest Mixtape for free!
Make sure you download this.

He's been doing this for 5 years and has worked with the likes of Typah and Big Narstie
Follow him on Facebook and Twitter for more info, free downloads and banter!

Moving on...

Not usually my type of music, I must admit...

Wonky Ninja is someone I've discovered through a few DJ mates in Sheffield, Every now and again I pop over to his Soudcloud to see what he's been up to and I recently discovered 'Carnival' which is a free to download.

The sample used is kinda following in the vein of 'Gramophonedzie' and that bloody 'Americano' song, but...doesn't commit 100% to the cause of pop music!

The drop kinda reminds me of Roska's Remix of 'Bangduck' which is currently my favourite song to play out, so put these two together with a nice funky beat and we're onto a winner.

This is fun music and we all like having fun don't we? Anyways head over to his Myspace to find out about his latest movements.

Introducing.....'Future Garage'

I'd like to make you aware of 'Future Garage' as I believe we're on the verge of a resurgence of 'Garage' and it's many different sub-forms.

I like to think that this resurgence is happening due to people my age who grew up listening to Garage and 2-Step are now realising that they miss those sounds that got buried too quickly by Speed Garage, Bassline and early Dubstep and wan't to recreate it with their own contemporary feel.

For me as a drummer I absolutely love the skip and shuffle beats that Garage songs are built upon, 'Future Garage's' fundamental similarity to the 'Old Skool' sound is exactly this.
The beats are well structured bouncy and drive the songs along, here's an example of this new sound...

As you can hear the similarity lies in the beat and vocal arrangement style, but the major difference is the more chilled out(in my opinion) synth's and less immediate bass sounds.

Now I love the 'old skool' sound but would there be much point in simply re-creating those sounds?

I believe that this will be the next big shift in underground music when people tire of Dubstep's day by day throwaway progression....

You ought to check out the following artists pioneering these sounds..

Deadboy- http://www.myspace.com/deadboysoundboy
Whistla-http://www.myspace.com/whistla
Martyn-http://www.myspace.com/martyndnb

And sign up to the Future Garage forum where you'll find out about all angles of this new music...

http://futuregarageforum.com/

Here are a couple of mixes to listen to, to help introduce you to the these 'Future' sounds, The one from myself fuses the similarity between old and new I hope you enjoy!
